Conveyor
idler manufacturer introduces robotic welding
In an industry
first, Melco has installed a sophisticated robotic welder that
even surpasses the technology employed by automotive manufacturers.
It includes a robotic welding machine, highly sophisticated operating
software, universal modular fixtures, a computerised bending machine
and associated tooling. Installed at a cost of R2-million, (US$300,000)
it improves consistency in the quality of the company’s
manufactured conveyor idler bases.
The upgrade also improves output
rates and eliminates operator fatigue. The greater consistency
afforded by automated welding means that critical idler bracket
tolerances are better maintained. Aligning the brackets accurately
minimises the likelihood of belt misalignment, reduces wear on
the tube of the roller, and increases roller life. In future Melco
hopes to integrate the robot welder software with its 3D modeling
package to decrease current bracket design programming times from
eight to less than two hours.
